There are many culinary items, syrups and liquids that are used in making cocktails, aside from the alcohol. Examples are bitters, liqueurs, cream and grenadine. Scroll below to learn some simple non-alcoholic drinks, which contain grenadine as a mixing ingredient.
In the arena of mixing drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, one key rule to be followed is, the more ingredients, the better the drink. From the olives in a martini added as a garnish, to the ice and the alcohol used, a cocktail or a mocktail is highly influenced in flavor, texture and taste by its ingredients. One key mixing ingredient used in many cocktails and mocktails is grenadine syrup.
The term “grenadine” is derived from the word grenade, which is French for pomegranate. Though traditionally made from pomegranate juice, grenadine syrup is actually a thick syrup of dark berry juice and sugar, that when combined, provides a sweet but tart flavor. Fruits that can be used include cherries, raspberry, strawberries and blackcurrant. Thickness can be imparted with the addition of corn syrup.
With its bloodshot red color, grenadine can impart a lot of color to a colorless or mildly colored liquid or at least impart a pinkish tinge, example drinks being pink lemonade and the red zone of a Tequila Sunrise. You can purchase commercially made grenadine sauce or make it at home.
