Scones are delicious British snacks that are served as accompaniments with tea and coffee. Many countries have their own versions of it. This snack has found its way into the food palate of many cuisines. They also taste amazingly delicious when served with a generous helping of whipped cream. If you just can't get enough of this tempting dish, then try some of these yummy recipes.
Basic Method
  • Sugar, ⅓ cup
  • Salt, ½ tsp.
  • Raisins, ½ cup
  • Sour Cream, ½ cup
  • Egg, 1 (large)
  • All-purpose Flour, 2 cups
  • Baking Powder, 1 tsp.
  • Baking Soda, ¼ tsp.
  • Unsalted Butter, 8 tbsp. (frozen)
First, you would need to adjust the oven rack to the lower-middle position. Preheat the oven to 400° F. Take a medium-sized bowl and add baking powder, flour, sugar, and baking soda. Sprinkle some amount of salt as well. Meanwhile, grate the butter into the flour mixture and add the raisins. Mix sour cream with egg in a small bowl. Blend well, till it becomes smooth. With the help of a fork, stir the sour cream mixture into the flour mixture. Then, press this dough together till it forms into a ball.
Now, place it on a lightly floured surface. Press this ball of dough into an 8" circle. Use the remainder portion of sugar for sprinkling over this dough. Cut it into 8 triangles and place it on a cookie sheet. Keep a gap of an inch between each triangle. Bake this preparation till it turns golden brown for a period of 15 minutes. Once it cools down, you can serve it immediately.
With Pears and Skim Milk
  • Whole Wheat Flour, ¾ cup
  • Baking Powder, 1 tbsp.
  • Maple Syrup, 3 tbsp.
  • Pear, 1
  • Raisins, ⅓ cup
  • Liquid Egg Substitute, 3 tbsp.
  • Pears, ¾ cup (finely chopped)
  • Skim Milk, 2 tbsp.
  • All-purpose Flour, 1 cup (unbleached)
Coat a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and preheat the oven to 375° F. Then combine flour along with the baking powder. Mix these ingredients well. Then, stir in the syrup along with the currants, egg substitute, and pear. Add some milk to have the right consistency for this dough. Then, make a ball out of this dough and place it on a lightly floured surface. Pat it gently so that it forms a 7" circle. Once done, place this dough on a baking sheet. Cut it into 12 triangle shaped pieces. Leave a gap of one inch between them. Brush the surface lightly with some skimmed milk. Bake this for about 20 minutes, till it turns a shade of golden brown. Serve it hot.
With Grape-nuts
  • Sugar, 2 tbsp.
  • Salt, ½ tsp.
  • Butter, 6 tbsp.
  • Water, 1 tbsp.
  • Milk, ¼ cup
  • Grape-nuts, 1 cup
  • Raisins, ½ cup
  • Eggs, 2 (slightly beaten)
  • Baking Powder, 2½ tsp.
  • Instant Coffee Powder, 1 tbsp.
  • All-purpose Flour, 1¾ cups
For the sugar glaze
  • Water, 1 tbsp.
  • Sugar, ¼ cup (powdered)
  • Instant Coffee Powder, ⅛ tsp.
First, you would need to grease some baking sheets and preheat the oven to 425° F. Meanwhile, mix flour with the baking powder. Add sugar and salt. With the help of a pastry blender, cut the butter and blend it into the mixture, till it resembles coarse crumbs. Then, dissolve instant coffee in water and blend the eggs and milk together. Stir this into the flour mixture and ensure you blend it well. Now, add cereal and raisins to this mixture and meanwhile, place the dough on a floured surface. Shape it into a rectangle of 12x4 inches. Place this on baking sheets and bake it for about 10 minutes. To prepare glaze, dissolve the instant coffee powder in water and add it to the powdered sugar. Blend this mixture well. Use this glaze to brush over the warm scones for added flavor.
