How to Make a Pink Squirrel Drink

Pink Squirrel is a cocktail that is sweet and rich in flavor, and is a mix of alcohol and ice cream. Ever tried this combination? Well, you can now. We, in this Tastessence post, bring you some recipes to make the Pink Squirrel drink at home.

Crème or Cream?

The term “crème” in Crème de Noyaux does not mean that we use cream. In fact, it is a highly sugared liqueur that can be used in making cocktails.

Have you tried the combination of alcohol with ice cream before? Okay, some of you may not even want to try it, but let us tell you that Pink Squirrel is one of the most popular cocktails served everywhere. No, don’t get your heads running yet; it has nothing to do with squirrels that are pink! crème de noyaux (pronounced as ‘noy-yew’), also called crème de almond, which gives the drink its beautiful pink hue. It is an almond-flavored reddish-pink liqueur, that is made from apricot kernels. It is said to have been invented in a bar in Wisconsin in 1941, but became popular only in the ’60s. It was popular as one of the ‘girl drinks,’ as the housewives there were looking for a stronger drink than lemonade. But for now, you won’t need to go to a bar to taste this drink. Here are some recipes, so that you can make and enjoy this drink at home itself.

Making Pink Squirrel at Home

Recipe 1

Ingredients

  • Crème de noyaux, 2 oz.
  • White crème de cacao, 1 oz.
  • Vanilla ice cream, 2 scoops
  • Chocolate shavings, to garnish (optional)
  • Maraschino cherries, to garnish (optional)

Preparation

  • Blend all the three ingredients until it becomes smooth.
  • Pour into martini glasses, garnish with chocolate shavings or cherries, and serve chilled.

Recipe 2

Ingredients

  • Crème de noyaux, 2 oz.
  • Vodka, 1 oz.
  • Vanilla ice cream, 2 scoops

Preparation

  • Blend all the ingredients well and pour the mixture into martini glasses. Garnish with cherries or chocolate shavings if you desire. Your Pink Squirrel drink is ready to be enjoyed!

Recipe 3

Ingredients

  • Grenadine syrup, 2 oz.
  • White crème de cacao, 1 oz.
  • Milk, 2 oz.

Preparation

  • Blend all the above ingredients well and pour the mixture into glasses filled with ice. Garnish cocktail glasses with cherries or chocolate shavings if you desire, and strain the mixture in it. Your Pink Squirrel drink is all ready!

Tips

  • You can also use two ounces of heavy cream, or a combination of heavy cream and milk (1 oz. each) instead of vanilla ice cream.
  • You can substitute crème de noyaux with amaretto, since it is another almond-flavored liqueur. However, if you want your drink to be pink in color, it is better to stick with classic ingredients.

So, these were a few recipes for making Pink Squirrel at home. Easy, wasn’t it? You can experiment with the drink as you like. You never know, you just might end up inventing another wacky drink!
