Stewing is a method where a dish is cooked by simmering on low heat, for a long time. The dish prepared by using this method is called stew. It is made by combining ingredients like different types of vegetables, sausages, poultry, seafood, meat, etc. Though, usually it is cooked in water, there are many recipes where stock, wine as well as beer is used for cooking. To complete it, certain flavors and seasonings are added to the dish. One of the most commonly cooked dishes in homes across the world is the beef stew. Like all others, even this one is not only delicious, but also nourishing and healthy. This is a dish that has been made in homes since several centuries. So, if you are interested in knowing some recipes, here they are.

Vegetable Beef Stew Recipe

Ingredients
  • Lean Sirloin, 2 lb.
  • Small Mushrooms, 2 cups
  • Dry Red Wine, 1 cup
  • Olive Oil, 3 tsp.
  • Medium Celery Stalks, (sliced) 2
  • Stewed Tomatoes, 12 oz.
  • Ground Mustard, 1 tsp.
  • Water, 1 cup
  • Medium Carrots,
    (sliced) 4
  • Dried Thyme, 1 tsp.
  • All-purpose Flour, 3 tbsp.
  • Large Onion, (chopped) 1
  • Medium-Size Potato, (chopped) 2
Preparation

Discard the excess fat from the beef and chop it into small cubes. Once this is done, take a large soup pot and heat olive oil on a medium-to-high flame. When the oil becomes hot, place the beef pieces in the pot and stir them till they become brown in color. This should be followed by the vegetables, red wine, ground mustard, and thyme. After adding these ingredients, reduce the flame to low and allow it to simmer for an hour.

Take some stew that is being cooked in a bowl and add flour to it. When the flour gets completely dissolved, add it to the rest of the stew in the pot. Add salt and pepper as per taste. Cook it for an extra 10 - 15 minutes till the liquid becomes thick. Take the pot off the flame and transfer into a serving bowl. Allow it to cool and then serve.

Homemade Beef Stew Recipe

Ingredients
  • Beef Chuck, (cubed) 2 lb.
  • Beef Broth, 3 cans
  • Large Potato, (peeled and diced) 6
  • Vegetable Oil, 4 tbsp.
  • All-purpose Flour, 3 tbsp.
  • Black Pepper, 1 tsp.
  • Garlic Powder, 3 tsp.
  • Carrots, (sliced) 6
  • All-purpose Flour, ½ cup
  • Salt, 1 tsp.
  • Small Boiling Onions, 12
  • Celery Stalks, (sliced) 3
  • Cold Water, 1 tbsp.
Preparation

Take ½ cup flour in a plastic bag and mix it with garlic powder, pepper, and salt. Add one piece of meat at a time and shake well so that the beef gets well coated. Repeat this process till all the pieces of beef are coated with the mixture. Take some oil in a large pot and heat on a medium to high flame. Place one piece of beef in the hot oil and fry until it becomes brown. Continue the procedure till all the pieces get completely browned. After this, lower the flame and fry onions till they become translucent. Remove the fried onions and set them on a separate plate.

Discard the excess fat that is found in the pot. Put carrots, fried onions, celery, potatoes, and broth in the pot. Stir on a medium flame till it reaches boiling point. Reduce the flame to low and allow it to be cooked for two hours by covering it with a lid. However, remember to stir the broth occasionally. If you want a thicker broth, after 1 ½ hours of cooking, add a mixture of 3 tbsp. flour and water into it. Mix well and allow it to cook for 30 minutes.

Beef Stew with Noodles

Ingredients
  • Stew Meat, (cubed) 1 lb.
  • Tomato Soup, (condensed) 1 can
  • Noodles, 1 cup
  • Cheddar Cheese, (grated) 1 cup
  • Onion, (chopped) 1 cup
  • Water, ¼ cup
  • Vegetable Oil, 2 tbsp.
  • Celery, (chopped) 1 cup
  • Frozen Carrots and Peas, 1½ cups
  • Salt, 1 tsp.
  • Tomatoes with juice, 1 can
  • Pepper, ¼ tsp.
Preparation

Heat oil in a large skillet on a medium flame and fry the beef cubes till they are brown in color. Put in tomatoes, noodles, tomato soup, seasonings, and water. Stir with a wooden spoon till all the ingredients are well combined. Cover the pot with a lid and cook for 2 hours on a low flame, stirring occasionally. When the beef pieces become tender, add grated cheese to it and mix well. Cook it for 15 minutes more and then add the peas and carrots to it. Cook the whole mixture for an extra 7 minutes until the peas and carrot become tender.

You can serve these recipes with a plate of steamed rice, some grilled vegetables and wine. You can serve a glass of Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon to complete this delicious meal.
