As the name rightly suggests, crab cake is made of crab meat and many other ingredients. Even though the meat of any type of crab can be used for making this dish, blue crabs are said to be the ideal choice. Another popular choice is Dungeness crab. Crab cakes come in different sizes. From the size of a small cookie, it can be as big as a hamburger, and is often served with sauces. Crab cakes can be made in different ways like, baking and deep-frying, and are mainly used as appetizers. Crab Cake Appetizer
- Crab meat (without shells) – 1 pound
- Green onions – 3 (finely chopped)
- Crackers (crushed) – ⅓ cup
- Bell pepper (finely chopped) – ½ cup
- Mayonnaise – ¼ cup
- Peanut oil – ½ cup
- Egg – 1
- Worcestershire sauce – 1 tsp.
- Dry mustard – 1 tsp.
- Garlic powder – ¼ tsp.
- Lemon – half (juiced)
- Salt – 1 tsp.
- Cayenne pepper – 1 pinch
- Flour – for dusting
Mix all the ingredients, except oil and flour. Shape the mixture in the form of patties. Dust them with flour, before frying. Take a skillet and heat oil in it, over medium heat. Carefully place the crab cakes in the skillet and fry them in batches. Make sure to flip them in between, so that both the sides get browned evenly. It may take around four to five minutes, for one side to get done. The cooking time may vary with their size. Bigger crab cakes take more time to get fried. This dish can be served with any sauce of your choice. As per this recipe, you can prepare four to six servings of this dish, and it will take around 20 to 30 minutes for the whole process.
Baked Crab Cake
- Crab meat – 1 pound
- Eggs – 2
- Worcestershire sauce – 2 tbsp.
- Mayonnaise – ¼ cup
- Finely chopped green onions – 2 tsp.
- Dry mustard – 1½ tsp.
- Old Bay seasoning – 1½ tsp.
- Seasoned bread crumbs – ½ cup
- Black pepper (freshly ground) – ¼ tsp.
- Salt – for taste
Take a large bowl and mix all ingredients, except crab meat and bread crumbs. Once done, add bread crumbs and combine well. Mix the crab meat, and shape the mixture in the form of patties. Refrigerate for a few hours, before baking. Place the crab cakes on a baking sheet sprayed with olive oil. Spray some oil on the crab cakes too. Bake them in the oven, which is preheated to 350° F for around 10 to 12 minutes. Serve them with tartar sauce or honey mustard. As per this recipe, you can prepare around 10 medium-sized crab cakes.
