How to Freeze Lasagna

Freezing lasagna can help you store left over lasagna; or help you prepare delicious lasagna in advance. Freezing lasagna is a simple process, that anybody can do.

Lasagna is a popular pasta dish which is celebrated all over the word. Lasagna is made with alternating layers of cheese sauce, vegetables, beef, sausages, etc. This is a popular Italian dish which is known to all pasta lovers. If you are thinking of making homemade lasagna or have leftovers from previously made lasagna then there is no need to waste it. You can freeze lasagna and store it for months. But, how to freeze lasagna? Here are some simple tips that will help you.

Ways to Freeze Lasagna?

Some people prefer to freeze lasagna after baking, while some prefer freezing and storing uncooked lasagna. Both methods work well, however cooking lasagna and then freezing it will save precious time in future. But, some people prefer storing uncooked lasagna directly into the fridge. Both methods are fine, as they don’t tend to alter the change of lasagna.

Things You Need

To freeze lasagna you will need some special baking pans. So, buy baking pans which can be used for baking and freezing both. Check the label on the pan properly to see if it is a suitable one. Silicone bakeware is one option for this job. You can buy FDA-approved food grade silicone pans and use them for freezing and baking lasagna. You will also need aluminum kitchen foil and plastic cling film wrap paper. If you wish to store small pieces of lasagna then you will need airtight zip lock bags too.

Freezing Uncooked Lasagna

To store uncooked lasagna, assemble all the ingredients. In the baking pan, line a large aluminum foil, and start working in layers of lasagna. Once you are finished with this cover, the lasagna with the aluminum foil. Cover up neatly the lasagna with foil, and carefully work with the aluminum foil to prevent any tearing of the foil. Then place the pan in the freezer.

Freezing Cooked Lasagna

If you wish to store cooked lasagna, then use these tips. First finish baking the lasagna. Take the cooked lasagna out of the oven, and keep it on a table. Then let it come down to room temperature. Lasagna will take around one to two hours to cool down. After the lasagna has returned to room temperature, cover lasagna with one layer of plastic film wrap neatly. After this layer apply one more layer of plastic film wrap for better covering the lasagna. Then finally cover the lasagna with one layer of aluminum foil wrap. Now, place the pan of lasagna neatly in the freezer to preserve it well.

Freezing Small Lasagna Pieces

This step is pretty much the same as the above mentioned one. However, avoid freezing uncooked lasagna pieces, as it will just make thawing and cooking of small uncooked lasagna pieces cumbersome. To store small pieces of lasagna in the freezer, cut up lasagna in small or medium pieces. Then double wrap them with plastic film wrap. Then take a large zip pouch or any air tight bag and place all the lasagna pieces in it.

You can store lasagna for around 2-3 months in the freezer. However, it is advisable to consume it within one month’s storage time. Also, in case your fridge stops working or there are power problems, let the lasagna thaw and then heat it completely and finish it before it gets spoiled.

When eating the frozen lasagna, simply let it thaw for 4-5 hours or overnight if necessary. Then pre-heat the oven at 170 degrees Celsius and take off all the plastic wrap and aluminum foil and line the lasagna in the baking dish. Cover the lasagna in foil and heat it for around half an hour and serve.
