Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic punch varieties are rather refreshing saviors during sweltering hot summers. They quench your thirst and cater to your taste bud tantrums.

Punch is a drink that is made by mixing different fruit juices, and sometimes alcoholic beverages like vodka, rum, etc. They say that the punch originated in India, and it was the English sailors who took this drink to their country in the 17th century.

The word ‘punch’ is actually coined from the Hindi word paanch, which translates to five because they Indian versions were made with five ingredients, namely: lemon, spices or tea, sugar, spirit and water.

A version of punch is the very popular ginger ale punch. Ginger ale is a ginger-flavored carbonated drink. Earlier, punch was made with golden ginger ale which gave the drink a strong flavor and dark color. These days, however, it is usually made with dry ginger ale. Adding the ale enhances the taste of any punch.

Flor de Jamaica Punch with Ginger Ale

Things you will need

• Ginger, 1 2″ piece (finely sliced)
• Champagne/sparkling white wine/sparkling mineral water, 2
• 750-milliliter bottles (chilled)
• Water, 4½ cups
• Ginger Ale, 4 cups (chilled)
• Hibiscus blossoms, 1 cup (dried)
• Sugar, 1 cup
• Ice
• Mint
• Lime slices

How to concoct

In a pan, pour the 4½ cups of water, ginger and the hibiscus blossoms and wait for it to start boiling. As soon as the boiling point is reached, reduce the heat to low and let a slow simmer take over for 20 minutes. Remove the pot from heat. Add the sugar gradually and stir to dissolve it completely in the concoction. After that, let the pot sit unperturbed until it cools down optimally. Run the liquid through a sieve after that and collect the clear liquid in a punch bowl. Pour in the ginger ale and the champagne and stir well. Add the ice, mint leaves and the lime slices to the punch.

Cranberry Punch with Ginger Ale

Ingredients
• Ginger ale, 2 12 oz. cans
• Cranberry juice cocktail, 1 32-oz. bottle (chilled)
• Pink lemonade concentrate, 1 6-oz. can (frozen, thawed, prepared as per can directions)

How to concoct

Add the cranberry juice cocktail to the prepared lemonade and chill. Add the ginger ale just before serving. Serve with ice cubes.

Sangria with Ginger Ale

The ginger ale makes it sweeter but not fizzy (when used in the place of club soda)

Ingredients

• Maraschino cherries, 8
• Lemon, 1 (cut into circles)
• Lime, 1 (cut into circles)
• Orange, 1 (cut into circles)
• Dry red wine, 1 750-milliliter bottle
• Ginger ale, 2 cups
• Brandy, ½ cup
• Triple sec, ½ cup
• Lemonade concentrate, ⅓ cup (frozen)
• Orange juice⅓ cup
• Lemon juice, ¼ cup
• White sugar, ¼ cup

How to concoct

Commingle the wine, ginger ale, brandy, triple sec, lemonade concentrate, orange and lemon juice and sugar thoroughly in a clean glass jug. Add the cherries and the citrus slices into the transparent liquid and place the jug in the fridge for a good 8 hours so that the flavors meld optimally. Serve chilled.

Cucumber Punch with Ginger Ale

Things you will need

• Cucumbers, 2 (medium, scored lengthwise, thinly sliced widthwise)
• Ginger ale, 2 liters (diet, chilled)
• Grapefruit soda, 4½ cups (diet, chilled)
• Water, 3 cups
• Lemonade concentrate, 1 12-oz. can (frozen, thawed)

How to concoct

In a lidded jug, pour in the soda and add lemonade concentrate and stir. Add the cucumber slices. Cover and chill for 8 – 10 hours. When serving, transfer the liquid to a punch bowl and pour in the grapefruit soda and ginger ale. Mix well and serve. A rather soothing drink for summer parties.

Peach Punch with Ginger Ale

• Ginger ale, 1 liter
• Water, 500 milliliters
• Peach nectar, 375 milliliters
• Sugar, 250 milliliters
• Lemon slices
• Ice

How to concoct

Pour all the liquid ingredients into a large, clean glass bowl and stir to mix. Pour in the sugar gradually and keep stirring continuously in order to dissolve it completely into the concoction. Add the ice after that and float in the lemon slices.

Pour the ginger ale into a jug with a lid and add the ice cream, strawberries, apples and ice cubes. Stir to mix. Finally pour in the champagne and servez la boisson.

Banana Slush Punch with Ginger Ale

Ingredients

• Bananas, 4 (ripe)
• Orange juice concentrate, 2 12-fl. oz. cans (frozen)
• Lemonade concentrate, 1 12-fl. oz. can (frozen)
• Pineapple juice, 1 46-fl. oz. can
• Ginger ale, 3 liters
• Water, 6 cups
• White sugar, 2 cups

How to concoct

Begin by pouring in 3 cups of water and sugar into a food processor. Add in the bananas as well and blend until you have a smooth, creamy and thick mixture. No lumps should remain. Transfer the mixture to a large, clean glass bowl and pour in the orange juice and lemonade concentrates along with the remaining 3 cups of water. Stir to mix really well. Now pour this mixture equally into three different plastic containers (approximately 18 servings/container) and freeze for a minimum of 4 hours. Now, just when you need to serve, take one container out, pour the slush into a punch bowl, add a liter of ginger ale, mix and serve. So, you will be able to serve in 3 batches.

Spicy Orange Punch with Ginger Ale

For 30 servings of this refreshingly delectable drink

Ingredients

• Orange sherbet, 1 quart
• 7 Up®, 1 2-liter bottle
• Ginger ale, 12 oz.
• Cranberry juice, 6 oz.
• Orange juice, 6 oz.
• Canadian whiskey, 1 cup
• Pumpkin spice, 1 pinch

How to concoct

Pour in the orange sherbet, 7 Up®, ginger ale, cranberry juice, orange juice, and Canadian whiskey into a 1-gallon punch bowl and then season with pumpkin spice. You can add cinnamon sticks, sliced oranges and lemons, and some star anise if you like. A grand thing about this recipe is that you can transform it into a non-alcoholic punch by not adding the Canadian whiskey.

Grape Punch with Ginger Ale

Lay your hands on

• Welch’s Grape Juice, 2 quarts (chilled)
• Maraschino cherries, 1 10-oz. jar (with juices)
• Pineapple, 1 10-oz. jar (crushed, with juices)
• Canada Dry Ginger Ale, 2 liters (chilled)

How to concoct

Place all the ingredients in a jug and mix well. Pour about 2 cups of this punch into ice trays and freeze in order to serve later with the punch.
