  • 3 pounds tart apples
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup rolled oats
  • 4 tablespoons cold butter (½ stick)
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Apple crisp, made with the old-fashioned topping of crunchy oats, is quite simple to make. For making this delicious dessert, peel and chop the tart apples. Toss them into a large bowl and add some lemon juice to it. Now in another bowl add the cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar. Mix this up and add it to the apples. Toss to combine all the ingredients.
In a separate bowl, combine the oats with the flour and the sugar. Cut the butter into seven to eight pieces and add the butter to the flour. Use a pastry blender to mix the ingredients and then add in the chopped nuts. Use a square baking dish and butter to it. Spread the apple mixture on the bottom and then add the flour mixture atop it. Bake the apple crisp for around thirty five to forty minutes till the apples turn tender and the topping is browned. Serve this warm, crispy, yummy dessert with some vanilla ice cream.

For the Crumble
  • 300 g plain flour, sieved pinch of salt
  • 175 g unrefined brown sugar
  • 200 g unsalted butter, cubed at room temperature
  • Knob of butter for greasing

  • 450 g apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1 cm pieces
  • 50 unrefined brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon plain flour
  • 1 pinch of ground cinnamon

Heat the oven to 350ºF. In a large bowl, add the flour and the sugar. Now add some cubes of butter and add it to the flour. Use a pastry mixture to mix it till it resembles breadcrumbs. Now place the cut apples in another bowl and add in the sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Butter a 9-inch square baking dish and spoon the fruit mixture on it. Add the crumble mixture on top and bake the apple crumble for forty five minutes till the topping is browned and the fruit mixture is bubbling. Serve with thick cream.
