4 Simple Recipes for Aromatic and Flavorsome Teriyaki Sauce

Teriyaki is basically a cooking method which is specially used in Japanese cuisine. In this method the food that is going to be broiled or grilled is mixed with a sauce or marinade, which is called Teriyaki sauce. Soy sauce is one of the main ingredients used for preparing it. Honey, ginger, garlic, etc., are some more ingredients that can be used for preparing it. It is used for marinating, basting, and dipping meat based dishes. Given below are different recipes for this sauce, that can be used as an accompaniment with various Japanese dishes.
With Brown Sugar
  • Soy sauce, ¼ cup
  • Water, 1 cup
  • Ginger, 1 tbsp. (freshly grated)
  • Brown sugar, 3 tbsp.
  • Garlic clove, 1 (minced)
  • Cornstarch, 2 tbsp.
  • Cold water, ¼ cup
In a pan combine water, brown sugar, ginger, garlic, and soy. Bring the mixture to boil and keep stirring it constantly. Meanwhile, dissolve cornstarch in ¼ cup of cold water and then add it to the sauce. Stir the mixture until a thick texture is attained. If you feel that it has become too thick, then add some water or soy sauce in it.
With Scallion
  • Soy sauce, 1 cup
  • Sugar, 1 cup
  • Ginger, 1 tsp. (finely grated)
  • Garlic clove, 1 (minced)
  • Scallions, 3 (finely chopped)
Take a small pan and combine sugar and soy in it. Then place the pan over low heat to dissolve the sugar. Once the sugar melts, remove the pan from heat and combine the remaining ingredients with it. Let the mixture cool for a while and then transfer it to a glass jar. Place the glass jar in a refrigerator. This Hawaiian style sauce, blends well with tofu recipes, grilled meats, and noodles.
With Grapefruit Juice and Hoisin Sauce
  • Soy Sauce, 1 cup
  • Grapefruit Juice, 1 cup
  • Hoisin Sauce, ⅓ cup
  • Ketchup, ¼ cup
  • Rice Wine Vinegar, 3 tbsp.
  • Brown Sugar, ¼ cup (packed)
  • Ground Ginger - 1 tbsp.
  • Habanero Pepper, 1 (halved and seeded)
  • Garlic Cloves, 4 (smashed)
In a mixing bowl add grapefruit juice, hoisin, rice wine vinegar, garlic, habanero pepper, soy, ketchup, brown sugar, and ginger. Combine the ingredients and transfer the mixture in a pan. Place the pan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to boil. Then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer the mixture for 10 more minutes. It should attain a thick texture. Keep stirring the mixture occasionally. Then strain the sauce and remove ginger and pepper from it.
With Orange Juice, Apple and Pineapple
  • Soy sauce, 3 cups
  • Japanese sweet wine, 1½ cups
  • Orange juice, ½ cup
  • Fresh pineapple with skin, 6 oz. (chopped)
  • Apple, 1 (cored and chopped)
  • Garlic cloves, 2
  • Ginger root, 1 tsp. (freshly grated)
  • White sugar, 4 tbsp.
Add orange juice, pineapple, garlic, ginger, half of sugar, Japanese sweet wine, and soy to a pan. Place the pan over high heat and bring the mixture to boil. Simmer the mixture over low heat for about 20 minutes. You can adjust the sweetness with the remaining sugar. Then, strain the mixture and your Japanese sauce is ready.
With Japanese Sweet Wine
  • Dark soy sauce, ¼ cup
  • Sake, ¼ cup
  • Japanese sweet wine, 2 tbsp.
  • White sugar, 1 tbsp.
In a pan, combine Japanese sweet wine, sake, and soy. Place the pan over medium heat to dissolve the sugar. Your sauce is ready. You can use it immediately or refrigerate and then use.
You can see that preparing this sauce is very easy. So, do not spend money on buying it from the market, instead prepare it fresh at home.
