Blooming Onion with Dipping Sauce
Ingredients for sauce:
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cream style horseradish sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt to taste
Ingredients for blooming onion:
  • 1 large, sweet onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1½ teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt to taste
In a medium-sized bowl, beat the egg and milk and keep aside. In another bowl, mix the all-purpose flour with black pepper, dried oregano, cayenne pepper, ground cumin, dried thyme, paprika, and salt, and combine well. Peel the onion and cut it into equal sized rings. Separate the rings, dip them into the egg and milk mixture, coat them with the flour, and then dip the flour coated onion back into the egg mixture. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan and transfer the coated onion rings to it. Fry the onion rings in the hot oil until they turn brown on all sides. Put the onion rings on a plate covered with paper towels to soak up the excess oil. For the sauce, combine the mayonnaise, horseradish sauce, oregano, black pepper, cayenne pepper, salt, ketchup, and paprika in a medium-sized bowl. You can use a blender to mix these ingredients properly. Transfer this sauce into a separate bowl, and keep in the refrigerator for at least half an hour. Garnish this sauce with a sprig of cilantro and serve it with fresh onion rings.
