Love White Sauce in Your Pasta and Pizza? Here's How to Make It

Also known as Béchamel sauce, this basic white sauce is the starting point for other classic sauces. Learn how to make this sauce with only a few, simple ingredients.

Traditionally, the white sauce is made with a roux of hot milk, flour, and butter. The thickness of the sauce can be adjusted by altering the proportion of milk or flour.
White Sauce for Pasta
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cube chicken bouillon, crumbled
  • 1½ cups boiling water
  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • Ground white pepper, to taste
  • In a thick bottom pan, melt butter and margarine over medium-low heat.
  • Add chicken bouillon and flour, and keep whisking continuously.
  • After about 5 minutes, the flour will have turned slightly brown.
  • Now, add water to prepare the roux.
  • As you stir, add milk and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes till the sauce thickens.
  • Before serving, add ground white pepper.
White Sauce for Pizza
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and white pepper, as per taste
  • In a pan, melt butter over medium-low heat so that you do not burn itr.
  • After the butter melts, add flour and salt, and stir continuously so it doesn't stick to the pan.
  • Once the flour is cooked, add milk to the mixture to prepare the roux.
  • As you continue to stir, the sauce will thicken.
  • If the sauce has not reached the desired consistency, continue to stir.
  • Remove the sauce from heat and spread it on your pizza.
You can change the quantity of ingredients mentioned in the above recipes as per your preference.
