Gelatin shots or Jello shots are popular party beverages, in which gelatin is mixed with alcoholic drinks like rum, vodka, tequila and in some cases grain alcohol instead of water or fruit juice.
There are many rumors that surround the discovery of Jello shots, one such rumor credits mathematician Tom Leher. He claims to have discovered Jello shots in the 1950s while working for the NSA (National Security Agency). Leher wanted soldiers to stop consuming alcohol, so he mixed gelatin gel with vodka and came up with Jello shots. This was proven false when someone discovered the early recipes which date from 1862.
Many facts claim that the original recipe was discovered by Jerry Thomas, and is mentioned in his book which is based on beverage and drink recipes.
It is important to mix the right amount of alcohol and cold water to ensure that the shot sets. The stronger the alcohol the more water would be required for it to set. If you are hosting a Jello shot party for your friends, think about diluting the shots with more water. Since alcohol is contained within the Jello, it is absorbed slowly and shows its effect after sometime. Using less alcohol in your shots will also make the party more fun.
