Hot sauce is basically any sauce made from chili peppers. Chili sauce and pepper sauce are two other names for hot sauce. As the name suggests, these sauce recipes are very hot in taste and the burning sensation experienced while consuming it, is due to the chemical called capsaicin.
These sauces can be made from a variety of peppers like jalapenos, tabasco, habanero, etc., and each of these peppers has different level of heat intensity. Preparing hot sauce at home, is quite easy and you can have it in large quantity at an economic price. All you need to do is simply select your favorite peppers and prepare your hot sauce. You can start with one of the recipes given below.
Homemade Hot Sauce Recipes
Mexican Hot Sauce Recipe
  • Warm water - 1½ cups
  • White vinegar - 1 teaspoon
  • Ground cumin - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic cloves (pressed) - 2
  • Dried guajillo chili - 1
  • Dried chili negro (pasilla) pepper - 1
  • Dried New Mexico chili pods - 2
  • Packed brown sugar - 1 teaspoon
To prepare this easy hot sauce recipe, first remove the stems and seeds from all types of chilies listed above. Then, take a cast-iron skillet and place it over medium heat. Add the chilies in the skillet and roast them for about 2 to 3 minutes, until they turn lightly brown. Place these roasted chilies in a small bowl and pour the warm water over them. Leave them to soak in the water for about 40 minutes.
Then take out the New Mexico chilies and the guajillo from the bowl and scrape the pulp with help of a spoon. Now, combine this pulp and pasilla chili in a food processor along with the water in which they were soaked. Puree this mixture properly, so that all the ingredients get combined properly. Then, add cumin, salt, brown sugar, vinegar and garlic to the mixture in food processor and again puree the mixture to attain smooth texture.
Habanero Hot Sauce Recipe
  • White vinegar - 2 cups
  • Serrano peppers - 36
  • Habanero peppers - 24
  • Onion powder - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic cloves (minced) - 3
  • Ground black pepper - 1 teaspoon
  • Chili powder - 1 tablespoon
Habanero sauce is one of the best homemade hot sauce for wings, specially chicken wings. First add the vinegar to a large saucepan and bring it to boil. Then combine habanero peppers and serrano peppers to the boiling vinegar and cook the mixture for about 3 minutes. Pour this mixture into a blender and then add onion powder, pepper, chili powder and garlic to it. Blend the mixture at low speed and then increase the speed gradually to attain a smooth texture. This can take about 3 minutes.
Green Hot Sauce (Hot Salsa) Recipe
  • Tomatillos (husked and rinsed) - 10
  • Serrano chile peppers (sliced) - 8
  • Onion (sliced) - 1
  • Garlic (chopped) - 1 tablespoon
  • Salt - 2 tablespoons
This is a homemade hot salsa recipe that can be served with tacos and nachos. Take a saucepan and combine serrano peppers, tomatillos, onion and garlic in it. Then add water to the saucepan to cover the ingredients. Add 2 tablespoons of salt and bring the mixture to boil. Once the mixture boils, reduce the heat to medium-low and then cook the mixture until the tomatillos become soft and they attain a brownish color. This may take about 20 to 30 minutes. You may add some more water so that the mixture does not burn. Then, pour these cooked vegetables into a blender and puree the mixture until it becomes smooth.
