Scalloped Potatoes with Ham

Ingredients
  • Baked ham, ¼'' slices, 12 oz.
  • Cheddar cheese, grated, 2 cups
  • Milk, 1½ cups
  • Butter, room temperature, 3½ tablespoons
  • Flour, 2 tablespoons
  • Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced, 4
  • Onions, julienne, 2
  • Salt and black pepper, for taste
Directions

Preheat the oven at 350ºF, and grease a baking dish with ½ tablespoon of butter. In a pan, melt 1½ tablespoons butter on medium heat; but make sure butter doesn't burn. Add the flour, and cook it for a minute or so. Take the pan off the stove, and add the milk. Keep whisking the ingredients, and when everything is combined properly, bring the pan back on the stove and let it simmer as you stir. Once the mixture turns thick, again remove from the stove, and add salt and black pepper as per your taste. Take another pan to cook the onions in 1½ tablespoons of butter. When the onions are golden brown, season it with salt and black pepper. Pour some of the flour mixture in the baking dish, and then add the sliced potatoes on top. Spread the onions along with slices of ham, and then the cheese. Keep making layers, and in the end, sprinkle some more cheddar cheese on top. Place the dish inside the oven, and bake for about 45 minutes. When the cheese turns golden and begins to bubble, remove the baking dish, and serve hot.
