Sirloin tip roast, as the name suggests, does not exactly come from the sirloin part of the beef. In fact, it lies in the rear section of the sirloin and is also often called beef knuckle. As the sirloin tip roast possesses very low fat content and a lot of connective tissues, it is said to have less moisture as well as flavor. Hence, to add flavor to this part of the meat, it is extremely important to learn the appropriate way of cooking it. This is because any mistake in the way of cooking it can make the meat unsuitable for eating. So, if you want to know how to cook sirloin tip roast, here is a method that you can follow.

Methods of Cooking Sirloin Roast Tip

The most common method of cooking sirloin roast is roasting. Though roasting gives it the best flavor, overcooking it can make the meat very dry. Hence, the most important thing one should have while cooking this dish is a digital thermometer. This will help you to know the internal temperature of the meat correctly. Also, the best way of roasting the meat is by cooking it slowly at a very low temperature for a long time. So, let us take a look at the ways of making sirloin tip roast beef.

Roasting Sirloin Tip Beef

  1. Take the sirloin tip roast from the refrigerator and allow it to warm at room temperature for at least an hour. This is important because cooking a cold sirloin tip roast may make it very dry and hard. Also, allowing it to warm can speed up the roasting process.
  2. Check the temperature of the roast occasionally and when it reaches 50ºF, season it with salt, pepper, and other seasonings of your choice.
  3. Drizzle vegetable oil over the roast and place it on the roasting pan.
  4. Keep the roasting pan in a preheated oven, and cook on a high temperature for at least twenty minutes.
  5. Once this is done, the next step would be to roast the meat on a low temperature.
  6. Reduce the temperature of the oven to 250ºF, and attach a digital thermometer to it to check its internal temperature.
  7. Cook the roast till the internal temperature reaches 140 - 150ºF for medium cooked and 160 - 170ºF for completely cooked sirloin tip roast.
  8. After this is done, do not cut the meat immediately for consumption.
  9. This is because cutting the roast soon after it is done, may allow the juices inside to run out, leaving you with a dry meat.
  10. So, cover it with an aluminum foil and allow it to sit for at least twenty minutes.
  11. After this time period, take it off from the aluminum foil and slice it into thin pieces.
Cooking in Crock Pot

Another way of cooking is with the help of a crock pot. The crock pot cooks food very slowly, which is the best way of getting a well cooked sirloin tip roast. For this crock pot recipe, you will require:
  • Sirloin tip roast, 3-4 lb.
  • Medium red potatoes (cut into 1 - 2 inch pieces), 5 - 6
  • Chicken bouillon cubes, 3
  • Baby carrots, ½ a small bag
  • Water, 1½ cup
  • Boiling water (optional), ¾ cup
  • Vegetable oil, 3 - 4 tbsp.
  • Minced garlic, 3 tsp.
  • All-purpose flour, to cover roast
  • Garlic salt, to cover roast
  • Salt and pepper, as per taste
Procedure
  1. Take some flour in a plate and roll the meat on it such that it is completely coated in it.
  2. Season the flour coated roast with salt, pepper, and garlic salt.
  3. In a large skillet, heat oil on a medium flame.
  4. When the oil is fully heated, add the minced garlic and stir till it becomes brown.
  5. Place the roast on the skillet and brown all the sides evenly.
  6. You can add extra flour to the places where it has rubbed off.
  7. When all the sides of the roast have completely browned, transfer it to the crock pot.
  8. Also, add the remaining oil from the skillet into the pot.
  9. Once this is done, place the skillet on the heat again and add bouillon cubes with water to it.
  10. Cook this mixture and bring it to a boiling point.
  11. Take the skillet off the stove and pour the mixture in the crock pot that holds the roast.
  12. Cook the sirloin tip roast on a low temperature for nine hours or for five hours, if kept on a high temperature.
  13. Put in the baby carrots and potatoes to the crock pot, just 1½ hours before the set time to cook the roast. Finish cooking, when the carrots and potatoes become tender.
As we have said earlier, one of the most important things that has to be taken care of while cooking the roast is the temperature of the meat. Any change in that will leave you with an uncooked or overcooked sirloin tip roast. Once you keep this in mind, cooking sirloin becomes quite an easy task.
