Scrumptious Candy Apple Recipes

Candy apples, a favorite dessert that is found in almost every house around Halloween. Popular among kids, the variety of ways in which candy apples can be made, compels adults to indulge in them too.
A great hit among kids as well as adults, whole apples coated with sugar candy and different toppings has everyone wanting for more. The real secret to making delicious candy apples is striking the right combination of apple and sugar coating.
A firm but tart apple can go well with a sweet coating, although choosing tart or sweet apples is entirely a personal preference. The simple and delicious recipes for homemade candy apples are sure to wow your guests and provide unique taste.
You need not be an avid cook to perfect these recipes. The flavors and equipment that you require are easily available at grocery stores at reasonable prices. Use small size apples for all these preparations.

Corn Syrup Apple Candies

Time Required : 45 minutes
Servings : 8

  • Apples - 8
  • Wooden skewers - 8
  • Granulated sugar - 2 cups
  • Light corn syrup - 1 cup
  • Hot water - ½ cup
  • Red food color - ½ teaspoon
  • Candy thermometer
~ Wash and dry the apples thoroughly and remove its stems carefully.
~ Stick some wooden skewers in place of the apple stems and keep these apples aside.
~ Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with a nonstick cooking spray. Keep the baking sheet aside.
~ In a saucepan, mix water, sugar and corn syrup and place it on medium-high heat.
~ Place a candy thermometer in the saucepan to check the heat. Stir it until the sugar starts to dissolve and once the mixture reaches a temperature of 250° F, leave it to cook for a while without stirring.
~ Add the food color to the mixture and stir until it dissolves completely.
~ Use a wet pastry brush to wash down the sides of the saucepan in case any crystallization occurs. Continue to cook the mixture until its temperature reaches 285° F.
~ Remove from the heat and stir it to smooth it out. Pick an apple by the skewer, dip it in the candy mixture and rotate the apple to coat all the sides.
~ Twirl the apple to remove the excess mixture and place it on the baking sheet. Repeat the same procedure with the remaining apples and allow them to cool thoroughly and enjoy them after a day.

Caramelized Candy Apples in Ice Cream

Time Required: 30 minutes
Servings: 8

  • Sugar - 1 ½ cups
  • Butter - 3 tablespoons
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Fuji apples - 3
  • Vanilla ice cream
~ Wash and dry the apples thoroughly and then peel and core them.
~ Cut them lengthwise into eight equal pieces and set aside.
~ Pour all the sugar into a large skillet and place it over medium-high heat. Wait for the sugar to start melting and then simmer the heat until the sugar syrup turns into a pale amber color.
~ To this, add the butter and vanilla extract and stir it until it dissolves well.
~ Then add the apples, cover the skillet and cook on low heat till the apples start exuding their juices.
~ Uncover and cook for another 5 minutes till the sugar starts turning thick.
~ Remove from heat and allow it to cool.
~ Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Quick and Easy Candy Apple Recipe

Time Required: 45 minutes
Servings: 6

  • Strawberry glaze - 14 ounce
  • Corn syrup - 1½ cups
  • Cherry gelatin dessert mix - 3 ounce
  • Hot water - ½ cup
  • Granny Smith apples, washed and dried - 6
  • Popsicle sticks - 6
~ Mix the glaze and corn syrup in a saucepan on medium low heat, and simmer for 20 minutes and keep aside.
~ In the meanwhile, stir the gelatin mix in hot water and pour in another saucepan with glaze.
~ Stir this mixture frequently. Cook this mixture until the temperature on the candy thermometer is between 180 and 200°F.
~ Insert the popsicle sticks into the apples as they are being cooked.
~ When this mixture reaches 200° F, dip each apple in the corn syrup that is kept aside.
~ Rotate and turn the apples until completely coated in the syrup.

Chocolate Caramel Candy Apple

Time Required: 1 hour 20 minutes
Servings: 4

  • Ripe apples - 4
  • Wooden skewers - 4
  • Soft caramel candy - 14 ounces (1 bag)
  • Water - 2 tablespoons
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips - 10 ounces
  • Shortening - 2 tablespoons
  • Chopped candy bars, chocolate, or nuts - 2 cups
~ Place an aluminum foil on a baking sheet and spray it with nonstick cooking spray.
~ Wash and dry the apples carefully, and remove the stems. Insert skewers or Popsicle sticks or chop sticks firmly in the stem ends.
~ Unwrap the caramel in a microwave safe bowl and add water to it. Microwave it for 1 minute, then stir it and again microwave it for another minute, or until it melts completely. Let the caramel be formed into a smooth liquid.
~ Hold the apple by the skewer or stick and dip it in the caramel liquid, tilting the bowl and rotating the apple to cover it with an even coat. Remove it from the liquid and twirl it upside down to let the excess coating come off. Repeat this with rest of the apples. Set all the dipped apples on the baking sheet.
~ Place these caramel-covered apples in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
~ In the meanwhile, mix the chocolate and the shortening in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave until it is melted, stirring every 45 seconds.
~ Dip the caramel-covered apples in this melted chocolate, and pour some extra chocolate over the apple if you like.
~ While the chocolate is still wet, dip or roll the bottom half of the apples in chopped candies. Place them back on the baking sheet.
~ Refrigerate these apples for 45 minutes.The sweetness of chocolate and caramel will make the candy even more interesting with every juicy apply bite!

Jackson Pollock Candy Apples

Time Required: 20 minutes
Servings: 6

  • Green Granny Smith apples - 6 (you can use red apples if you wish)
  • Bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped - 3 ounces
  • Premium white baking chocolate, coarsely chopped - 2½ ounces
  • Wooden sticks - 6
~ Wash the apples thoroughly, remove the stems and insert the wooden sticks in each.
~ Place the bittersweet chocolate in a glass bowl and microwave it for a minute or until it melts, while stirring it every 20 seconds to smooth it.
~ Hold one apple at a time at the stick over the bowl and drip 2 teaspoons of melted chocolate on it. Place the apples on a baking sheet with wax paper.
~ Take the Premium baking chocolate in a glass bowl and microwave it for a minute, or until it melts while stirring it every 15 seconds to smooth it.
~ Hold each apple, one at a time, over the bowl and pour 1½ teaspoons of melted chocolate over it.
~ Place each apple on a baking sheet with wax paper and chill them until ready to serve.

Tips to Enhance Decoration

~ To bring in the natural touch to your recipes, use small sticks or twigs from trees instead of the Popsicle sticks.
~ Use dried leaves that must have scattered around. Wash them carefully and arrange them in a pattern on you platter. Serve each candy apple on the leaf.
~ Mark some interesting Halloween sketches on the apple coating when it is still hot. Let the coating cool down completely and enjoy the candy with each bite.
