Bloody Mary is a cocktail that contains tomato juice, vodka, a celery stick, salt, pepper, and some other spices. This drink was first prepared in 1920, by an American bartender, Fernand Petiot, at Harry's New York Bar in Paris.
Petiot mixed equal parts of tomato juice and vodka, that resulted into a world-famous cocktail concoction. The name 'Bloody Mary' was suggested by a patron in the bar. The drink reminded him of the Bucket of Blood Club in Chicago, and also reminded him of a girl he knew, whose name was Mary, so the drink was called Bloody Mary.
After Petiot moved to New York, not many patrons were impressed by its bland taste. So Petiot added some black pepper, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, lemon, and a splash of Tabasco pepper sauce, thus inventing the spicy Bloody Mary mix. Let's find out how this drink is prepared.
Basic Bloody Mary
  • 1 can tomato juice
  • ⅓ cup vodka
  • Salt and pepper, as per taste
  • Pinch of sugar
  • 1 celery stalk
Method of Preparation
Into a chilled glass, add ice cubes. Next pour in the tomato juice and vodka. Add salt, pepper, and sugar according to one's taste. Garnish with a stalk of celery. Your cocktail is ready.
Bloody Mary Mix
  • 1 (46 fluid ounce) bottle tomato-vegetable juice cocktail
  • 1½ lemons, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon steak sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • ½ teaspoon celery salt
Method of Preparation
In a large pitcher, add the juice cocktail, lemon juice, and brown sugar. Next, add the Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, hot sauce, and celery salt as seasoning. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for 8 to 12 hours. This will help the flavors combine.
Wasabi Bloody Mary
  • ½ cup fresh lime juice
  • 4½ teaspoon wasabi
  • 6 cups low-salt tomato juice
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1¼ teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups vodka
Method of Preparation
Lime juice and wasabi should be combined with a whisk, until the Wasabi dissolves completely. Pour the mix into a pitcher and add tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, pepper sauce, and salt. Keep it in the refrigerator to chill. Stir in the vodka and serve over ice. You can serve the drink with a stalk of celery or pickled asparagus.
Hot and Spicy Bloody Mary Mix

  • 3 ounces spicy vegetable juice
  • ½ teaspoon lemon pepper
  • 3 drops Tabasco sauce
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Cracked black pepper, and celery salt to taste
  • Lime wedge
  • Celery stalk/green onion/pickled okra for garnishing
Method of Preparation
You need to mix the vodka, juice, tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and celery salt together. Now, strain the mixture and pour it into a glass with ice cubes. Garnish with the pickled okra/celery stalk/green onion.
Canning Bloody Mary Mix
  • 30 medium-sized tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and quartered
  • 2½ cups green pepper chopped
  • 1¾ cups carrots, diced
  • 1 cup celery, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ¼ cup parsley, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 1½ tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tablespoon Tabasco sauce (to taste)
Method of Preparation
In a large pot, cook the tomatoes, celery, carrots, onion, green peppers, garlic, bay leaf, and parsley, until mushy. This will take approximately 30-45 minutes. Once done, remove the bay leaf from the mushy mixture. Gradually add the vegetable mixture into a blender and purée it. Pass this purée through a fine sieve, so as to remove the extra seeds, if any. Pour this sieved liquid into a large pot and add the sugar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and Tabasco. Bring this concoction to a boil. Pour this boiled concoction into clean jars. Process them in a boiling water canner for 40 minutes. Your canned Bloody Mary is ready.
