Black forest cake, a favorite among others, originated in the Black Forest region of southern Germany. Commonly referred to as Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte in its native place (meaning black forest cherry cake), this tempting cake mainly comprises several layers of chocolate cake, with whipped cream and cherries between each layer. In some European traditions, sour cherries are also used in between the layers and also for the dressing on top. A black forest cake is usually saturated with Kirschwasser (cherry brandy) and with other liquors, too. However, in the United States, black forest cake is primarily prepared without alcohol.
Black Forest Without Alcohol
- 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tbsp. vinegar
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- ½ tsp. salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cold
- 1 (21 oz.) can cherry pie filling
- ½ cup sugar syrup
- Chocolate shavings or curls
Preheat the oven to 350 °F; oil and flour two 8-inch cake pans. Prepare the sour milk by combining the milk and vinegar, and keep it aside. Sift the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, oil, coffee, and vanilla, before stirring in the sour milk. Now, slowly beat in the flour mixture until well incorporated. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let them cool down. Meanwhile, prepare the filling by combining the cherry pie filling and the sugar syrup. Refrigerate the cherry mixture and spread it between the cake layers. Decorate the cake with the chocolate shavings, or with whipped cream and cherries.
Black Forest Using Cake Mix
- 1 dark chocolate cake mix
- 1 chocolate cool whip
- ¼ cup sugar syrup
- Milk chocolate shavings or curls
- 1 can of dark black cherries, drained
- Maraschino cherries, drained
Bake the cake as per the instructions given on the cake mix pack. Slice the cooled cakes into two (or more) layers and pour the sugar syrup on each. On a serving plate, place one layer of the cake and spread a ½-inch layer of chocolate cool whip on it. Add the cherries next, and put another layer of the cake over it (repeat this step if there are more layers). Spread the remaining chocolate whip and cherries on top, and decorate it with maraschino cherries and chocolate curls, or shavings.
