Black forest cake made using cake mix can be served as a delicious dessert to complement party food or even during any regular meal. Given in this article are two recipes that are easy to follow and absolutely delicious.

The traditional black forest cake consists of more than two chocolate cake layers, in which whipped cream and cherries are stuffed between each layer. For better taste, these cakes are also topped with shredded chocolate chips and shavings. A black forest cake recipe using cake mix makes your job easy as you do not have to go through that major step of combining accurate amounts of ingredients for making the base.
Easy Black Forest Cake
A black forest cake with chocolate and cherries look so tempting and delicious. You can make it on special occasions to serve as a dessert by following the steps mentioned below:
  • Chocolate cake mix, 1 packet (for 2 layers)
  • Pitted cherries, 2 cans (20 oz. each)
  • Cherry pie filling, 1 can (20 oz.)
  • Confectioners' sugar, 1 cup
  • Cornstarch, ¼ cup
  • Kirsch, 2 tbsp. (cherry brandy)
  • Vanilla extract, 2 tbsp.
  • Frosting (for cake coating and decoration)
  • First grease and prepare 9 inch cake pans and also preheat oven to about 350°F.
  • Referring to the directions, prepare the cake mix and place the batter equally in the two cake pans.
  • As per the stipulated time, bake the chocolate cakes for about 30 minutes and transfer them in a cooling rack. 
  • Meanwhile, you can prepare frosting for cake decoration by blending 3 cups chilled whipping cream and ⅓ cup sugar in an electric mixer.
  • Drain the cherries, not completely, but retaining ½ cup juice. 
  • In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the cherries, cherry juice, cornstarch, and sugar. 
  • Add vanilla and cook this mixture, stirring continuously until the juice thickens. 
  • Cool down and keep aside for cake topping. 
  • Divide frosting into two halves, one for coating the first cake layer and the other for decoration. 
  • Transfer one of the cakes in a platter and coat with 1½ cup frosting and top with cherries. 
  • Place the second cake layer and continue to spread with frosting and cherries. Before serving, brush the sides of the cakes with frosting, top with cherries and chocolate shavings.
Black Forest Cake without Eggs
  • Cake mix, 1 packet (for 2 layers)
  • Whipping cream, 2 cups
  • Vanilla extract, 2 tbsp.
  • Refined sugar, 2 tbsp.
  • Cherry pie filling, 1 container (20 oz.)
  • Semisweet chocolate, 1 oz. (shaved)
  • Kirsch, 2 tbsp. (cherry brandy)
  • As per the directions instructed in the packet, combine the cake mix and bake, so that you prepare 2 round chocolate cakes, each of 9 inch size.
  • Remove the cakes from the oven and transfer into a rack to cool down. 
  • In the meantime, take a mixing bowl and combine the whipping cream, vanilla extract, and refined sugar. 
  • Beat this mixture for about 5 minutes. 
  • Check whether the chocolate cakes are cooled down or not. If yes, brush the top of the cakes with cherry brandy.
  • Transfer one of the cakes on a platter, take about ¾ cup whipped cream mixture and coat the top of the cake. 
  • After spreading half of the cherry pie filling, place the second cake layer over the first one. 
  • You can coat the top of the second layer with the remaining cherry pie filling. 
  • Evenly, spoon the whipped cream along the edges, sides, and top of the cake. Sprinkle the semisweet chocolate over the cake and serve.
The traditional black forest recipe originated in southern Germany and is prepared with cherry brandy. Nevertheless, you can bake a cake without alcohol or cherry brandy.
