Baked potatoes are an all time favorite food item for people belonging to all age groups. They are very easy to cook in an oven and they show a golden brown skin. While serving them, you can simply put toppings of butter or shredded cheese. Another option is to prepare dressings of your favorite food ingredients. In this article, we will take a look at some delicious and healthy baked potato toppings.
For cooking, you should select medium-sized russet potatoes, preferably of regular shapes. Clean them with a stiff-bristled brush, and make sure that you don't skin them. Then prick them with a fork and rub their skin with vegetable oil and salt from all sides. The last step is to bake them in a preheated oven at 350°F for 1-1½ hours, based on their size.
Yogurt Topping
  • Yogurt, 1 cup (plain and non-fat)
  • Sesame Seeds, 1 tbsp. (toasted)
  • Dill, 1-2 tsp. (chopped)
  • Green Onion, 2 tbsp. (chopped)
  • Chives, 1 tsp. (chopped)

In a bowl, mix the yogurt, sesame seeds, dill, green onion, and chives. If desired, you can sprinkle salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir the mixture well and your topping is ready. This recipe is sufficient for topping 4 medium-sized potatoes.
Garlic Mushroom Topping
  • Butter, ½ oz.
  • Garlic Cloves, 2 (minced)
  • Mushroom, 6 oz. (sliced)
  • Cream Cheese, 2 tbsp.
  • Parsley (chopped)
  • Thyme (chopped)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Keep a saucepan over low heat and melt the butter. Add garlic and sliced mushroom, and cook for about 10 minutes, while stirring continuously. Add cream cheese and stir it; allow it to melt properly. Add the chopped herbs and seasonings as per your preferred taste. Spread this mixture on top of the potatoes and serve while it's still hot.
Baked Beans Topping
  • Baked Beans, 1 lbs.
  • Sea Salt (or Kosher salt)
  • Black Pepper (coarse and freshly ground)
  • Chili Powder (to taste)

This is the simplest and one of the tastiest toppings, and it is also considered as an excellent light meal. Heat the beans in a saucepan. Add salt, pepper, and chili powder. The quantity of chili that is added, depends on your preferred spiciness. Stir well and put this mixture on the potatoes. For an easy topping, you can cut them open before adding the beans.
Fried Bacon Topping
  • Bacon, 6 pieces
  • Cheddar Cheese, ¼ lbs. (grated)
  • Onion Powder, ¼ tsp.
  • Dill Weed, ½ tsp.
  • Garlic Powder, ⅛ tsp.
  • Seasoning Salt, ½ tsp.

Fry the bacon pieces till they are crispy. Allow them to cool down and cut them into smaller pieces. Mix this with grated cheese, dill weed, onion powder, garlic powder, and seasoning salt. If it's very dry, you can add small amounts of sour cream and butter. Mix all the ingredients well. Divide the potatoes in the middle. Scoop the bacon topping and serve.
Other than the above recipes, you can also try making the toppings out of green vegetables, pulses, and mushrooms. You can also consider flavoring them with chopped herbs and spices.
